What You  Should Know

About Chimney Rock National Monument

Chimney Rock National Monument protects an important Ancestral Puebloan community within the San Juan National Forest. Interpretive routes pass a pit house, Great Kiva, village structures and a Chacoan-style Great House Pueblo, revealing how people lived, gathered and observed the surrounding landscape more than 1,000 years ago.

Visitors can choose the easier paved Mesa Village route or the steeper Great House Pueblo Trail, which climbs to the upper mesa and broad views of the twin rock spires, Piedra River Valley and distant mountains. Public access is seasonal and managed through activity passes, self-guided visits and scheduled interpretive programs.
